Elections Administrator Yvonne Ramon told Action 4 News they are only about 6,000 votes shy of surpassing a record set in 2008.

Ramon said there are many factors that have played into this high voter turnout.

Everything from their mobile units to a push by local organizations to get there and vote.

"That is definitely helping,” Ramon started. “ACCT is out there calling people and making sure that if people need help or have questions you can use them as a support to get the answers to your questions."

Ramon adds, while the numbers are higher this time around—they are still very low.

Overall only about 28% of registered voters in Hidalgo County actually get out and vote.
