Libraries are the heart of every school and today, a few libraries will be receiving the 2012 National School Library Program of the Year Award.

This prestigious achievement is presented by Follet Library Resources to the South Texas Independent School District (STISD) Library Services for their exemplary work with integrating students and technology.

Lead Librarian Lucy Hansen, STISD Superintended Marla Guerra and Follet Executive Director Scott Chain were on Action 4 Sunrise to talk more about this award.

The STISD libraries received the American Association of School Librarians' 2012 National School Library Program of the Year Award, which recognizes exemplary school library programs that are fully integrated into the school's curriculum. It is a national award given to only two school districts in the country this year.

They are awarded a beautiful crystal statue and it brings with it a $10,000 prize that the district can put into its educational advances.

STISD libraries offer the full gamut of resources to support the academic success of students. The libraries house 100,000 books, 50,000 eBooks, 6,000 videos and 90 web databases, as well as laptops, NOOK e-readers, cameras and camcorders for student checkout.

The state-of-the-art facilities and equipment are frequently used to extend learning beyond the classroom, and the availability of Wi-Fi within the libraries also coincides nicely with the district's Bring Your Own Device technology initiative that was implemented at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.

Aside from integrating information literacy instruction into the curriculum, the libraries also host regular community art exhibitions, author visits and concerts to nurture the cultural and artistic side of the students.
