Authorities believe a drug debt of $800 dollars was the motive in a convenience store robbery just outside Harlingen city limits.

Cameron County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested 18-year-old Jose Guadalupe Olivares and 17-year-old Michael Anthony Flores on Tuesday.

The two are accused of working together to rob the Lone Star Convenience Store off Bass Boulevard and Expressway 83.

Court records show that Flores stormed the store armed with a gun around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Wearing a bandana, baseball cap and a jacket, Flores allegedly demanded cash at gunpoint.

Olivares allegedly pretended to be a customer and a witness to the crime but deputies watching the surveillance video saw him grabbing cash.

Court records show that Olivares told deputies he owed Flores $800 dollars in drugs.

The Harlingen teen told deputies that he and Flores planned to rob another store but they got arrested before they could.

The two teens appeared before Cameron County Magistrate Judge Alfredo Cordova on Wednesday where they were each issued $250,000 dollar bonds.

Both of them remain in custody at the Cameron County Jail.
