Authorities confirmed that they have arrested a Zetas leader who they believe is responsible for bus hijackings, murders and mass graves in San Fernando.
The Mexican Navy has confirmed marines arrested Salvador Alfonso Martínez-Escobedo in Tamaulipas on Sunday.
Martinez-Escobedo is the alleged Zetas drug cartel regional leader for the states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon and Coahuila.
The now jailed Zetas leader went by the drug cartel nickname "La Ardilla."
According to valleycentral.com archives, Martinez-Escobedo is believed to be the author of a series of passenger bus hijackings in San Fernando, Tamaulipas back in early 2011.
The passengers were all kidnapped, brutally murdered an buried in mass graves.
There had been a $15 million peso ($1.7 million dollars) reward for Martinez-Escobedo's capture for those crimes.
Marines flew Martinez-Escobedo to Mexico City where he's expected to be presented at 7 a.m. Monday.

México, D.F.- La Secretaría de Marina-Armada de México informa que el día de ayer fue asegurado en el estado de Tamaulipas, quien dice ser Salvador Alfonso Martínez Escobedo (a) "La Ardilla", presunto jefe regional de la organización delictiva de los zetas en Tamaulipas, Nuevo León y Coahuila.
El asegurado está siendo trasladado a esta capital para su puesta a disposición ante la autoridad correspondiente.
En las próximas horas se proporcionará mayor información.
