Soldier killed in Afghanistan to be buried in Brownsville

The Rio Grande Valley is preparing to say goodbye to another fallen serviceman.

U.S. Army Sergeant Jonathan Gollnitz was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan on Wednesday, September 26th.

According to the Department of Defense, the 28-year-old was critically wounded when an insurgent wearing a suicide vest exploded while he was on patrol.

Sgt. Gollnitz was one of two killed during the attack.

Both were assigned to the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Schweinfurt, Germany.

He served five years in the Navy before joining the U.S. Army.

Sgt. Gollnitz requested to be buried in Brownsville, the hometown of his uncle and aunt, Martin and Diane Kennedy.

His body is expected to arrive in the Valley on Friday where funeral services are pending at Buena Vista Funeral Home in Brownsville.

Gollnitz leaves behind a four-year-old son.
