What matters more than what's happening in your child's school?
The Action 4 News team sat down with superintendents from across the Rio Grande Valley Tuesday to get to the heart of the matter.
"I truly believe that we're trying to work with the media better," said Brownsville ISD Superintendent Dr. Carl Montoya.
Superintendents and other leaders representing 26 districts from across the Valley, all sitting at the same table with the Action 4 News team for an honest discussion.
The whole idea behind the Action 4 Education Summit was to take a look at how schools and the media can better work together to provide better information for parents about what is happening on campus.
"I was able to see from a different perspective. I saw the need for a reporter to do their job and how you see yourselves as we see ourselves as public servants," said Superintendent Gonzalo Salazar with Los Fresnos CISD.
Its no secret, releasing information on students in a time of crisis can be beneficial for the community.
Action 4 news explained when that information is not made available it makes it difficult for journalists to do their job.
Educators called for more stories about the problems they face.
They also want to see more about the good things that happen on campus like the iPads now in the classroom at McAllen ISD.
"We have a responsibility to be accountable but also we want to make sure there is a real understanding about the true nature of each story that both sides are told in an impactful way," said Norma Zamora-Guerra, Community Information Director with McAllen ISD.
"Nothing is more important than what schools do and that's forge a brighter future for kids and the media is a great partner in that," said Salazar.
