Fallen San Juan soldier to be buried on Wednesday

The body of a fallen San Juan soldier will be laid to rest this week.

Family and friends will gather at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan to celebrate the life of Chief Warrant Officer II Jose Luis Montenegro Monday and Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m.

Montenegro received a hero's welcome on Sunday when his body was handed over to his family at McCreery Avation in McAllen.

Hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects to the fallen soldier.

Montenegro's family have not spoken to the media, as they are still in mourning for the loss of their loved one.

Montenegro is the first serviceman to die from the city of San Juan from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Action 4 News has been in contact with the the city of San Juan.

They say they have recently honored Montenegro in council meetings, and participated in the transfer of Montenegro's body to the funeral home at his arrival.

Other plans for if the city will be doing anything else in memory of Montenegro are still pending at this time.

The funeral service for Montenegro will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in San Juan.

Montenegro's body will be buried at Rio Grande Valley State Veteran's Cemetery in Mission.
