Hidalgo County deputies are investigating an accidental shooting between two young children that left a BB gun pellet stuck inside a four-year-old girl’s eye.
According to dispatch, deputies responded at 8:48 p.m. on Thursday to a home near Mile 11 North and Mile 2 West Roads, north of Mercedes.
Investigators said an eight-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl were playing with a BB gun inside the home, when the gun went off once.
The pellet ended up lodged inside the little girl’s eye.
Paramedics arrived on scene before the deputies, and transported the girl to the hospital.
As of midnight, doctors were debating whether to transport the girl to another hospital to remove the pellet form her eye.
It remained unclear how the two young children accessed the BB gun, but investigators said an adult was nearby at the time of the shooting, though they refused to identify that adult’s relationship to the children.
According to dispatch, the eight-year-old was in the care of his parents, while the four-year-old girl remained hospitalized.
