Yellow ribbons adorned the family home of Army Warrant Officer Jose Luis Montenegro, the San Juan soldier killed in action Wednesday in Afghanistan.

The family was notified Thursday, and at Friday afternoon Montenegro’s mother flew out to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

Montenegro's mother appointed Commander Ricardo Peña, with America's Last Patrol, as the family's spokesperson.

"It’s really sad, it really is,” he said. “This was his third tour there and he was going to get out in a week. He had one week left to get out."

"We visited with the family this morning, they're taking it extra hard, of course it was her only son," he added.

While in Dover, Montenegro’s mother will identify his remains and will be briefed on how her son was killed.

She will also learn when she can expect to bring her son’s body back to the Valley.

"We need to show support and help these people in their time of need," Commander Jose Maria Vasquez said.

He urged the entire community, not just veterans, to rally behind the family, especially with the tough days ahead as they prepare to welcome him home one last time.

Montenegro’s mother is expected to return sometime Saturday.

His father passed away some time back, but he also leaves behind a sister.

America's Last Patrol will also organize a flag raising ceremony for the family, but the date and time are pending his arrival.
