The body of missing 18-year-old Andres Frias was recovered early Sunday morning.

According to McAllen Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator Wendy Smith, the body was found shortly before 2 a.m.

Officials began draining the canal around 11:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Before the draining began, crews had to dike the canal where Frias drowned and then pump water from an underground water line.

The recovery effort was led by the McAllen Fire Department, but several agencies took part in the search.

Frias went missing August 2 after going for a swim in the canal south of McAllen.

“We are extremely grateful to all the agencies who committed their manpower and resources to this recovery operation and who worked tirelessly to help bring closure to the Frias family,” said Smith. “We couldn’t have done this without their help.”
