An Edinburg woman is behind bars after being arrested for smuggling a baby she was supposed to deliver to a local Burger King.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested 32-year-old Susan Palomares-Guevara on a human smuggling charge Saturday.
The Edinburg woman drove up from Mexico at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge with a baby boy between 1 and 2 years old.
Palomares-Guevara claimed the boy was her son but was sent to secondary inspection where authorities learned the child was an illegal immigrant from Mexico.
Court records show that the baby wearing oversized clothes and that Palomares-Guevara had photos of another baby on her cell phone.
The Edinburg woman allegedly admitted she was bringing the baby was a favor as a friend.
According to court records, Palomares-Guevara picked up the baby at a pharmacy in Reynosa and was supposed to get $200 dollars to drop the child off at a Burger King restaurant in Hidalgo.
Palomares-Guevara appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Dorina Ramos in McAllen on Monday morning.
Judge Ramos denied bond for Palomares-Guevara until a Thursday morning hearing.
The baby was handed over to the custody of a facility for illegal immigrant children just outside Brownsville until his parents can be located.
