The owner of Dirty Al’s admits on Food 4 Thought to scoring the worst inspection report in his 25 years in the restaurant business.
“What can I say, it did happen,” Alfonso Salazar said.
A Cameron County health inspector slaps the South Padre Island eatery with 33 demerits on an initial health report.
The restaurant is located on 1 Padre Boulevard.
Cooks were found not properly washing their hands or wearing gloves, while touching ready-to-eat foods.
There were also live roaches and cross contamination of foods, according to the health report.
Salazar didn’t shy away from admitting fault to the Food Patrol for his restaurant’s low performer score.
“What did you do to correct things?” Action 4’s Ryan Wolf asked.
“They won’t happen again,” Salazar answered. “I got me another guy who will inspect all my restaurants each week.”
The public had a mixed reaction to the news.
Gabriel Trevino believed the score would only leave room for improvement.
But another Food Patrol fan opted not to eat at Dirty Al’s over the poor score, despite the owner’s claim it’s since been lowered to 8 demerits on a re-inspection.
“We will probably go scout somewhere else out to eat,” Juan said. “I appreciate you guys doing your job.”
Dirty Al’s wasn’t the dirtiest restaurant this week.
