Almost five acres including the back warehouse of Davila Recycling burst into flames on Wednesday afternoon.

The cause of the fire started when a man decided to burn wood and other trash without a burn permit.

The fire was so large that it forced traffic on southbound Expressway 77 to divert down to Business 77 in Combes.

The fire spiraled out of control, causing massive damage.

"It's burned a lot of different things,” said Humberto Barrera with Cameron County Emergency Management. “We know a warehouse has suffered major damage and we know a lot of stuff was burned.”

Barrera says there were some containers with unknown chemicals inside the warehouse.

The heat of the fire forced the containers to open up and caused explosions inside, making a bad situation even worse.

"We do need to remind the public that there is no burn ban in effect, but you still need to get a burn permit before you light anything up or burn anything," said Barrera.

Fire departments from Santa Rosa, La Feria, Combes and Harlingen all responded to the scene.

An arrest has been made in relation to the fire. Officials said that the man will be facing arson charges.
