A Mexican teenager is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after he allegedly tried to drive a stolen truck from Harlingen into Matamoros.

Harlingen police arrested 19-year-old Everardo Arizmendi on a state jail felony theft charge late Monday night.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Arizmendi is accused of stealing a 2006 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck from the parking lot of the La Quinta Inn in Harlingen.

The owner told police that he received notification that Arizmendi and the truck had been stopped by customs officers at Brownsville's B&M International Bridge.

Harlingen police took custody of the 19-year-old Mexican national at the bridge.

According to the truck owner, tools and other items worth more than $1,000 were still missing from his vehicle.

Arizmendi appeared before a Harlingen municipal judge on Tuesday morning where he was issued a $20,000 dollar bond.
