Every eight seconds a dog or cat is euthanized in the United States.

According to the National Humane Society that number equals to about 4 million pets killed each year.

What can you do to break the cycle?

Brenda Torres the Director of Humane Education at the Palm Valley Animal Center told Action 4 News adoption and spay and neutering is key.

“Every day we receive 100 to 150 pets” said Torres.  “In 2011, we had over 45,000 annually”.

Torres said in the summer months of stray pets are the worst.

“From June of 2011 to August, we had about 11,000 pets brought in” Torres said.

She added of that number about 85% had to be humanely euthanized due to the lack of adoptions.

Today, you can break the cycle by adopting a pet.

You can call the Palm Valley Animal Center in Edinburg at 956-686-1141.

This month they are also offering discounts on adoptions on small dogs and free grooming for the two dogs that appeared on Action 4 Sunrise if you adopt them by Saturday.

Palm Valley Animal Center is open 7 days week from 10pm to 6pm.  On Sundays, they are only open until 4pm.
