An overnight shooting in the Starr County community of Garceño has left one man dead.

It all happened at the intersection of FM 649 and Estrada Street around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Starr County Sheriff’s Office deputies spoke to Action 4 News about the investigation.

Deputies said 42-year-old Juan Alonzo Gutierrez was sitting in his car outside of his home.

Investigators said someone in a white pickup truck stopped and fired three or four times with one bullet hitting Gutierrez in the side of his neck.

Gutierrez was rushed to a hospital where deputies said he died.

A motive is not clear in the shooting but deputies believe they have identified and made contact with a person of interest.

Deputies said still can’t determine at this point if its drug or gang related but are hoping on help from the public to solve the crime.

Family members declined to talk on camera but said Gutierrez is from Reynosa and will be buried over there.

Court records show that Gutierrez had a criminal history including DWI, evading arrest and resisting arrest going back to 2007.
