Three inmates are dead and six are wounded following a prison brawl south of the border in Reynosa.

It all happened at the CEDES state prison on the city’s southside around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Tamaulipas State Police confirmed that it started as a fight between inmates in the “Mundo Nuevo” unit.

Authorities originally thought it was a prison break but state police, federal police and soldiers were called in to restore order.

Once the smoke cleared, authorities learned three inmates had been killed:

• Edgar Ivan Flores Alonso
• Jesùs Prado Vàldez
• Carlos Sifuentes Cruz

Another six inmates were reported as injured:

• Damián Hernández Marroquín
• Bonifacio Cortez Maya
• Arnulfo Enrique Ontiveros Cantú
• Matías Prado Iñiguez
• José Aurelio Sosa Cuello
• Juan Carlos Hernández Ortiz

No arrests have been reported and no charges have filed at this time but a state investigation into the incident continues.

The incident prompted the Mexican military to mobilize helicopters in the skies and soldiers in the western part of Reynosa near the maquiladora plants.

The brawl also put American law enforcement officials on alert.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño told Action 4 News they are aware of the situation near the maquiladoras.

Treviño added that at this time, there is no immediate threat to the United States so they will not be implementing their contingency plan.

That plan calls for a series of steps to mitigate threats from south of the border, including deployment of deputies and other law enforcement agencies to the border.

Sheriff Treviño said he is in contact with the Joint Operation Intelligence Center to determine if such an immediate threat develops.
