Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos has asked a federal judge to postpone a racketeering trial scheduled for late June.
Attorneys for Villalobos filed a motion for continuance before U.S. District Court Judge Andrew S. Hanen in Brownsville on Tuesday afternoon.
Court records show that the trial for Villalobos and Austin-based attorney Eduardo "Eddie" Lucio was set for June 28th.
Lucio is not related to the Texas state senator or state reprsentative who have the same name.
According to the motion, their racketeering trial could take up to three weeks time.
Villalobos argued that it will take his attorneys need a lot of time to go through the audio recordings and other evidence to prepare a legal defense.
The district attorney is asking for the trial to take place after February 15th, 2013.
Judge Hanen had not issued a ruling but records show that neither prosecutors nor attorneys for Lucio oppose the motion.
The proposed delay would push the trial well past the May 29th primaries.
Villalobos is among eight Democrats and three Republicans vying for the newly-created U.S. Congress District 34 seat.
