BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (AP) -- A South Texas police commander says he is retiring after a nude photo that he had sent to a woman with his city-issued cellphone landed on the Internet.

Brownsville police Cmdr. William Ingram told the Brownsville Herald Tuesday that he had made a mistake and decided to retire.

The woman was a former employee who left the department in 2008.

Ingram said he submitted his retirement papers May 1 after word spread within the department. The photo was sent earlier this year.

Ingram served with the department for 35 years and was most recently commander of the traffic division.

Acting Police Chief Orlando Rodriguez said he only became aware of the photo after Ingram submitted his retirement notice.
