Governor Rick Perry granted Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia permission to fly United States and Texas flags at half-staff in honor of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Joseph Henry Fankhauser.

The former Sharyland ISD student was killed in the line of duty will serving on his sixth combat deployment in Afghanistan.

The Governor’s office responded to Judge Garcia’s request by saying, “all state and national flags in the County of Hidalgo and any adjoining political subdivisions may be lowered to half-staff on Monday in honor of the life and military service of United States Army Staff Sergeant Joseph Henry Frankhauser.

Judge Garcia sent out a letter to all political subdivisions in Hidalgo County informing about the Governor’s approval and ordered that all county buildings lower their flags to half-staff.

Flags at school, city and government buildings were suggested to be lowered as well.

Flags will return to full-staff on Tuesday.
