Racial comments and Facebook posts made by members of a school district  to a mother and two young girls has caused uproar among the city of Hidalgo.

The Hispanic mother, who is married to an African American man, and her two daughters were eating lunch at the poling area near the Hidalgo City Hall with members of the Citizens United group.

The Concerned Citizens group, rivals of the Citizen United group, was sitting nearby when they began poking fun at the three family members.

Concerned Citizens members yelled out to the mother and two daughters, “Bananas, bananas. Where can we get bananas?”

They also made statements referring to monkeys when asking about bananas.

The husband was called and he immediately came to where his family was eating.

An altercation almost broke out and police had to come to the scene.

Later that day, the same Concerned Citizens members posted pictures of apes on the family’s Facebook pages.

Members of the community group in trouble consist of employees of Valley View Independent School District including a coach and a school district member.

Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz said, “Anyone who has participated in activity or laughed along with racial comments will not be tolerated and removed from (their) position or fired.”

A press conference is to be held near the city hall at 5 p.m. Monday.

It is assumed that the husband will not attend the press conference because he is over heated about the situation.
