The Rio Grande Valley is in mourning following the death of Tejano musician Cali Carranza.

Family members confirmed that the Pharr-based musician lost his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Known as ALS, the disease targets nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement.

Fans are leaving their condolences on Carranza’s Facebook page.

Carranza started his musical career in the 1970s but later went solo where he became known for such songs as “Pideme La Luna” and others.

Family members have announced funeral arrangements, which they say are open to the public.

Carranza’s family is asking the public to donate to ALS Association of Texas.

Statement From The Carranza Family

Thank you all for your prayers, comments and love. Please continue to keep us in your thoughts as we struggle to move on without my dad's beautiful smile and voice.

As we mentioned earlier this morning, dad wanted donations to be made to the ALS Association in his honor. You can do that by sending a check to the ALS Association of Texas at 8600 Wurzbach, Suite 700, San Antonio, TX 78240, (210) 733-5204 or you can do it online at http://webtx.alsa.org/goto/cali

Once we have finalized funeral arrangements, we will let you know.

Finally, besides his family, the thing Dad loved most in this world was his music and sharing it with all of you. Thank you for allowing him to do that for most of his life and for sharing your joy and love with him all of this time. Dad will always be with us, as long as his music lives on.

Thank you again.
