It took a coordinated effort to find and rescue a woman and her two girls after they were allegedly kidnapped late Tuesday night.

Police were told of a possible kidnapping when officers reported to a domestic dispute at a San Juan home around midnight Tuesday.

"The fact that he went out last night and confronted everybody there, assaulted one of the males, assaulted the female in front of everybody and pointed the weapon at all the victims; there was a great concern for us,” San Juan Police Chief Juan Gonzalez said.

Witnesses in the assault said the man not only took his ex-girlfriend but her two young daughters under the age of ten.

To where -- nobody knew.

By Wednesday morning, one of the girls' father reported to San Juan Police that his daughter might be in danger. (The two young girls, both under 10-years-old, had different fathers, neither was the ex-boyfriend who allegedly kidnapped them.)

The father’s call led police to San Bernardino Street in an area south of Alamo dubbed “Little Mexico”.

Officers arrived prepared.

"It was a very coordinated effort between all the agencies because we know these domestic incidents turn out to be a violent confrontation with law enforcement or to the victims,” Gonzalez said.

And it did turn violent when a U.S. Marshal opened fire on the suspect.

"He was shot one time, he is in one of the county hospitals going into surgery," Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino said.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is investigating the details as to why the shot was fired.

Sheriff investigators said they hope to wrap up the investigation in the next couple of days.

The suspect faces charges of aggravated kidnapping, terroristic threat and aggravated assault.

The woman and her two children are safe with family.
