A Rangerville mother is behind bars after she left her children out in the yard and one of them wandered in front a deputy’s patrol car.
Cameron County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested 27-year-old Sunshine Desiree Martinez on Saturday afternoon.
Court records released on Tuesday show a deputy was out on patrol off Rangerville and ABD Roads when a small boy wandered onto the street.
The boy picked something up but didn’t notice the deputy’s car until the deputy turned on the sirens.
The deputy found several other children playing in a nearby, unfenced yard.
No adult was in sight but Martinez came out her mobile home when the deputy turned on his sirens.
Martinez told the deputy she was the only adult there with the children and that she had gone inside to use the bathroom.
The deputy arrested Martinez on one count of child abandonment/endangerment.
Martinez appeared before Cameron County Judge Patricia Edelstein on Sunday where she was issued a $4,000 dollar bond.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Martinez remained in custody at the Cameron County Jail.
