Juan Torres still can't believe his eyes.

"Wow... This is nice... This is nice," he said.

A wooden ramp has been given to the 64-year-old, who will undergo a total knee replacement in less than one month.

"I get nightmares at night thinking how am I going to make it."

Without the special access, Juan feared he wouldn't be able to enter his rented mobile home in Weslaco.

It used to have steps.

"There are people out there that really do care," he said.

The former Marine last week showed Action 4 News the difficult living conditions he already endures because of a fixed income.

From busted windows to exposed wires, Juan pointed out multiple areas of concern which included mice and ants.

A ramp was financially out of the question, according to Juan.

His landlord offered to help but only after Juan was caught on his bills.

A group of Action 4 News viewers didn't think the veteran should have to wait for access to his home.

"I feel like somebody cares... I feel like I'm important... I feel like I'm appreciated," Juan said.

A total of four people with Dulces Caricias Adult Day Care Centers bought about $400 worth of lumber and spent over an hour building the ramp from scratch.

Kristopher Sylva, the director for the centers, says his family tries to do charitable work for their clients and also for the community whenever they can.

"After we saw your story Ryan... It touched me... Somebody like that should not go worrying day-by-day how am I going to get up in the morning... How am I going to get out of my house," Kristopher said.

The ramp changes everything.

"Thank you very much," Juan said to Kristopher.

"You're very welcome."

The kind gesture brings Juan to tears.

Every time he uses it he says he’ll remember the adult day care center that proved how people really do care.

"Somebody cares now... Yea," Juan said.
