The political race for the newly created Congressional District 34 is heating up.

Candidates are making their rounds and appearing in the community touting their political accomplishments.

Last night, eight of the eleven candidates running for District 34 showed up at Texas State Technical College in Harlingen for the school's first ever congressional debate.

Some eight Democrats and three Republicans are all vying for the District 34 seat.

The Brownsville-based seat was created during the recent redistricting cycle following the 2010 Census.

The seat covers all of Cameron, Willacy, Kenedy Counties and winds Hidalgo County and seven others near Corpus Christi.

With that much area to cover, hopefuls are making sure voters know who they are and what issues they stand for.

During the forum, all of the candidates largely agreed on boosting the economy in the Rio Grande Valley.

Each hopeful was given one minute to speak on how they intend to create jobs in South Texas.

Early voting runs from May 14th through the 25th.

The primary is set for May 29th.

What do you think?
Who are you voting for in the District 34 Race for Congress? (Voting ends May 29th at 7 pm)

We're sorry, voting for this poll has ended.
