School might be back in session, but that doesn't mean there still isn't a ton of work to be done on three McAllen schools severely affected by last week's storm.

Wednesday night, McAllen ISD school board members gave the green light to start bidding out contracts and start the repairs to campuses affected by last week's storm.

The damage is estimated in the millions although a set figure hasn't been released.

McAllen ISD administrators said to repair the roofs alone will cost a lot of money.

Hugo Avila , engineer for the school district, said three schools (McAllen High School, Seguin Elementary and Milam Elementary School) suffered the most damage after last week's storm blew in bringing heavy rain and unrelenting hail.

Avila said everything from buildings, to a-c units, windows and fencing will all have to be repaired.

The process will be a long on, but the school board's decision to start the bidding process is getting the ball rolling.

"The declaration really helps us to get our vendors onboard, get their quotes and get them on contract,” said Avila. “The hard part is waiting for those parts to come in. Some of the equipment isn't readily. Two week time before we can get it."

Avila said they're going to work on the repairs, work on the air conditioning units that were damaged and then start on the roofing.

School district engineers will also be testing for mold in all McAllen schools.

Tuesday’s upcoming school board meeting is when the district will decide how much repairs will actually cost them.
