As new businesses continue to move into the Rio Grande Valley, the high unemployment rate remains steady.
Victor De Leon with Workforce Solutions told Action 4 News the high unemployment rate does not paint the full picture of what the region deals with.
"It's impacted by several indicators,” De Leon said. “It might be folks who have stopped looking for jobs, those that have been added to the labor force, or just that the population is growing and not keeping up with the jobs that are being generated."
Another problem is education or the lack thereof.
Andrew Vera said he never considered education a problem until he was laid off from his job a year ago.
"You're making a set amount of money every month and you get comfortable,” said Vera. “You think you don't have to go to school until you lose that job."
Vera said he tried to find another job, but the ones that he wanted required more education.
"I looked at different things and said, 'I want to be in that income bracket and make this much.' I knew there wasn't a way and that I would be stuck in the under $20,000 a year mark if I didn’t go to school. That wasn't ok for me." said Vera.
The City Of McAllen and Workforce Solutions will host a hiring fair on March 30, 2012 at the Palmview Community Center in McAllen.
The fair will start at 9:00 am and end at 1:00 pm.
