A Brownsville family is getting ready to bury a man killed while jogging along Highway 100 over the weekend.

Brownsville police said 25-year-old Eduardo Polanco was killed by a man who fell asleep at the wheel.

Polanco's family is still too shaken up to speak to us on camera but they said the U.S. Marines veteran was an avid runner.

The Rio Grande Valley man participated in marathons from here to San Antonio.

They said it's a tragedy that his passion of running cost him his life.

Polanco grew up in Brownsville where he graduated from Hanna High School.

He was the youngest of four brothers.

His brother Rodrigo Polanco said Eduardo always talked about serving his country while growing up.

The family was not surprised that Eduardo joined the U.S. Marines when he graduated from high school.

Polanco served two tours overseas and returned to the Valley about two years ago.

He leaves behind his wife Kara and their 10-month-old son.

Police said 25-year-old Mission resident Juan Carlos Garcia fell asleep at the wheel of a 2007 silver Ford Mustang when he struck Polcano.

Garcia remains in custody at the Cameron County Jail under failure to stop and render aid and manslaughter charges.

Police say alcohol was not a factor.

Funeral services for Polanco will be held at the Garza Memorial Funeral Home in Brownsville.

Polanco is expected to be buried on Thursday in Mission.

Polanco was a member of the Brownsville Marathoners Running Club and recently competed in the San Antonio Rock & Roll Marathon.

He'll be buried at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission.
