A Los Fresnos man is dead after being hit by a car while jogging off Highway 100.

Brownsville police told Action 4 News that the person to blame fell asleep at the wheel.

It all happened on Highway 100 just east of Expressway 77/83 around 4 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators said 25-year-old Eduardo Polanco of Los Fresnos was jogging when he was hit by a 2007 silver Ford Mustang.

Paramedics rushed Polanco to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Police said 25-year-old Juan Carlos Garcia of Mission feel asleep behind the wheel of the Mustang.

According to police, Garcia then lost control and hit Polanco head-on.

Brownsville Police Department Spokesman J.J. Treviño said Garcia drove off but a witness followed him and forced him to pull over.

"In this case, we are glad that someone was able to stop him as far as whether the vehicle stopped on his own or not that's still under investigation, but the fact that there was witnesses and the witnessed did come forward that's definitely a plus for us,” Treviño said.

Police charged Garcia with failure to stop and render aid and manslaughter.

Investigators told Action 4 News that there is no evidence that alcohol was a factor.

Sources close to the Polanco family said he was a two-tour U.S. Marines veteran.

Polanco had just gotten married about two months ago and he leaves behind a 10-month-old son.

He is expected to be buried on Thursday at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetary in Mission.
