A Mission man will face charges for negligent homicide following a fatal rollover accident early Sunday morning that killed an 18-year-old woman.

Cpl. Manuel Casas, with Mission Police, said five people were traveling eastbound on board a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer at about 12:30 Sunday morning.

He said the driver was speeding and was distracted when he swerved to avoid hitting the car in front of him on Expressway 83 near the Conway Ave. overpass.

Cpl. Casas added that the driver, a 23-year-old man from Mission, then struck the railing and flipped over, landing on its side and skidding for about 40 yards.

The impact killed Yadira Peña, 18, who was allegedly not wearing a seat bealt, Casas added.

Two other people were injured and transferred to McAllen Medical Center.

The driver and one of the other passengers were not injured in the rollover.

Police arrested the driver. He will be arraigned on Monday morning on negligent homicide charges.
