A run to the bank to deposit $25,000 dollars in cash allegedly took a dangerous turn for a Stripes convenience store manager in Harlingen.

Harlingen police told Action 4 News it all happened at the Stripes store off West Tyler Avenue and the frontage road of Expressway 77/83 at around 1:53 p.m. Thursday.

Investigators said the 23-year-old manager walked out of the store and got into his car but saw someone wearing appeared to be a Stripes uniform standing outside his vehicle.

Thinking it was an employee, the manager opened the door to his car.

Investigators said that’s when the suspect held a knife to the manager’s neck and demanded the store's deposit bag, which had approximately $25,000 dollars inside.

The manager told police he gave the suspect the bag and he walked off calmly.

According to witnesses, the suspect then got into a maroon Ford Expedition that was parked on a side street near the Compass Bank.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, thin build, approximately 5'08" to 5'09". He was wearing khaki pants, a black "Stripes" uniform shirt and a black hoodie.

Witnesses also told police the suspect had an unknown tattoo on his face.

The store is located at one of Harlingen's busiest intersections where Tyler Avenue and Harrison Avenue runs into the frontage road of the expressway.

Anyone with information about this crime is encouraged to call the Harlingen Police Department at (956)215-5400 or the Harlingen Area Crime Stoppers at (956)425-TIPS (8477).
