Mexican authorities are asking the public to avoid an area near the Matamoros WalMart following reports of an intense gun battle between armed men and authorities.

It all happened in the Colonia Obrera off the city’s Periferico Loop during the lunch rush hour early Tuesday afternoon.

Residents used the #Matamoros hashtag from the social media network Twitter to report gunfire around 2:10 p.m. Tuesday.

Matamoros city officials quickly confirmed that there was a “situation of risk” an area near the city’s WalMart store.

Residents reported that they saw blockades and heard explosions near the Universidad Autonoma de Tamaulipas campus.

Others reported they heard gunfire and grenades being used.

One person posted a picture to Twitter of buses being used as a blockade off Calle Sexta and the Perferico highway, which is blocks away from the WalMart.

It’s not clear if there are injuries but one  resident reported seeing federal police and a truck from the morgue headed to the scene.

Action 4 News will provide more information as it becomes available.
