States like Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Iowa and New York already legalized same sex marriage.

It's illegal in Texas, however, John Sutterby said it's only a matter of time before it becomes legal.

Sutterby is a Minister and President of the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Brownsville.

“It’s a difficult legal situation, where you have a legal contract recognized in some states and not in the rest of the United States,” Sutterby said.

“States have the right to regulate what marriages they recognize, but generally, if it's recognized in one state, it will be recognized in another state."

The Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, or PFLAG Brownsville Chapter, will host a marriage equality march February 10 at Veteran's Memorial Park in Brownsville.

There, Sutterby will perform same sex marriage ceremonies.

Sutterby said the church advocated to make interracial marriages legal in the sixties, and adds the church is now pushing for same sex marriage.

"They're not asking for special rights, they're asking for the same rights as everyone else," Sutterby said.

The minister expects other churches to recognize same sex marriage in the near future.

"A lot of the main stream Christian congregations are having ordination of gay and lesbian clergy,” Sutterby said, “and I know in places like Iowa and Massachusetts, we do have Christian churches who are
performing same sex marriages."

The Rio Grande Valley is predominantly Catholic, and although the Catholic church believes marriage is only between a man and a woman, Sutterby said Valley youth might be more accepting.

"Young people tend to be much more accepting of same sex relationships, much more so than older people, and the Valley is a very young population," Sutterby said.

We contacted the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville for comment on this issue and are awaiting a response.

PFLAG officials said no couples have officially signed-up to be married during the event, but this would be Sutterby's first time officiating over a same sex marriage.
