An elderly handyman is behind bars after being accused of sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl in Brownsville.

Brownsville police arrested 78-year-old Melquides Saldaña on sexual abuse charges on Thursday.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Saldaña had worked as a handyman for the girl’s family for years.

The girl’s grandmother told police that she caught Saldaña kissing her granddaughter.

Detectives learned that Saldaña had been sexually abusing the girl for at least five months.

Police charged him with aggravated assault of a child and continuous sexual abuse of a child.

Saldaña appeared before a Brownsville municipal judge on Friday morning where he was issued $400,000 dollars in bonds.
