A Harlingen couple is behind bars after they allegedly robbed a carnival in the parking lot of a popular church.
It all happened at the Faith Pleases God Church off Expressway 83 around 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Harlingen police arrested 27-year-old Jose Luis Renteria and 24-year-old Stephanie Marie Navarro on aggravated robbery charges.
The church has been holding a fundraiser carnival all week and even allowed area residents to attend for free on Wednesday night.
Investigators told Action 4 News that Renteria broke into a carnival trailer and stole more than $3,800 dollars worth of equipment.
Renteria fled the scene in a car with Navarro dragging a carnival employee several feet in the parking lot.
Police tracked them down to the Colonia Las Juarez, which is located north of the church.
Investigators said both Renteria and Navarro fled on foot but officers caught Navarro nearby.
Renteria came back and surrendered a few times minutes.
Police were able to recover the stolen equipment and return it to the carnival operators.
Both Renteria and Navarro appeared before a Harlingen municipal judge on Thursday morning where they each received $300,000 dollars in bonds.
