Security has always been a top priority for the La Joya Independent School District.

But it was the students who prompted district officials to take further action to keep them safe.

"We know there is always room for improvement when it has to do with safety,” La Joya ISD Police Chief Raul Gonzalez said. “We've done a couple of surveys and the kids have told us in order for them to concentrate on learning they have to feel safe."

Chief Gonzalez said the district sprung into action.

He said they added security camera to all middle and high schools---leaving the elementary schools for last.

Chief Gonzalez said the district was going to wait another year before they installed the cameras in all 23 elementary schools---but other incidents changed their minds.

"Our vehicle pursuits, bailouts, people running our schools, and onto our complex---has pushed this project up."

Now all 23 elementary schools in La Joya ISD have five cameras on at all times.

Another security measure the district implemented was no longer allowing parents to walk their children to class.

Chief Gonzalez said they realized how dangerous this was and immediately put a stop to it.
