Mexican authorities are investigating the killing of a journalist whose body was found in his car in the wealthy northern Mexican city of Monterrey Friday.

30-year-old Raul Regulo Garza reported on local news for the newspaper "La Ultima Palabra."

He also worked for the social security department at Cadereyta municipal government.

Dozens of journalists have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico in the past five years.

However, the exact motive for the latest killing is unclear.

With spiralling violence ravaging the once peaceful city of Monterrey, "La Ultima Palabra" newspaper had avoided reporting on the drug war in order to safeguard employees from reprisals from notorious drug gangs.

Local news source Milenio reports that Garza was seen by witnesses driving at a high speed.

Unidentified armed men reportedly gave pursuit in another vehicle.

Authorities have yet to comment on the events surround the killing.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, attacks on reporters have intensified since Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched an army-led crackdown against drug gangs at the end of 2006.

The Latin American country now rivals Afghanistan as the deadliest country for reporters.
