The wind carried the sobs from Martha Kern as she stared at her 24-year-old son’s flag-draped casket.

Her husband Conrad, two sons, 19-year-old Kyle and 26-year-old Keith -- and her 25-year-old daughter Giselle comforted each other as they received the remains of Army Spc. Kurt Kern.

Dozens of people from veterans groups, law enforcement and community members gathered at McCreery Aviation in McAllen to support the family and honor the young man for his sacrifice.

From mcreery, Spc. Kern’s casket was moved to the Rivera Funeral Home on Pecan Blvd and Bicentennial Ave.

As part of the funeral services, the family will hold a public viewing at the funeral home on Saturday from 11 a.m to 9 p.m., with a rosary service at 7 p.m.

They will also have a mass for the specialist at the Mcallen Convention Center at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Friends of the family have also set up an account at Lone Star National Bank to help the Kern family with expenses.

Anyone wishing to help can stop by the Dove Branch and donate to the account under Martha Kern, or call (956) 661-0899.
