24 year old Army Specialist Kurt Kern’s remains should arrive in the Valley sometime next week.
That’s according to Commander Ricardo Pena with America’s Last Patrol, who has been in close contact with the fallen soldier’s family.
Pena says, Kern’s mother, along with two siblings traveled to Pennsylvania to identify his body. They should be returning home tonight.
Once they arrive, Pena, as well as other members of America’s Last Patrol will meet with them to discuss funeral arrangements.
Kern, a military police officer, was among three people killed on Tuesday while on patrol in Afghanistan. Military officials say they sustained fatal injuries when an improvised explosive device was detonated.
All three were assigned to the 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade based out of Fort Hood.
Kern joined the military in September 2009.
He graduated from McAllen Memorial High School, where he played football.
