Shootouts disrupt holiday shopping in Reynosa, Matamoros

A series of Wednesday evening shootouts disrupted holiday shopping south of the border in Reynosa and Matamoros.

It all started in the Colonia Narciso Mendoza neighorhood of Reynosa around 7:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Residents used the #reynosafollow channel of Twitter to report gunfire.

A chase and more gunfire continued on the nearby streets of Boulevard del Maestro, Calle Mozart and Calle Cañada.

The firefight was near in a nearby behind the Plaza Real, one of Reynosa's busiest shopping centers.

Authorities have not released a statement but soldiers the the Mexican army were reported to involved in some of the firefight.

Witnesses reported seeing an army vehicle filled with people who had been arrested.

Residents in Matamoros reported gunfire on Avenida Constituyentes around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Other residents reported gunfire continued in the southern area of the city past 10 p.m.
