Reports of a student having a gun triggered a lockdown at Joe Nelson Middle School and Santa Rosa High School on Wednesday morning.
Superintendent Heriberto Villarreal told Action 4 News they called city and county authorities following reports a student had a gun at Joe Nelson Middle School just before 9 a.m. Wednesday.
The lockdown at both schools was lifted shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday but parents told Action 4 News there reports of gunshots and a gun was seen in the cafeteria of the middle school.
Cameron County Sheriff’s Department and local police launched an investigation and located a bullet on the school’s property.
“One student was taken in for questioning,” said Superintendent Villarreal.
The student’s identity nor connection to this case was not revealed.
“An alert was quickly sent out through global connect to all parents, and letters will go home with all students today,” Villarreal added.
