BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (AP) -- The Border Patrol is investigating an incident in which an agent fired his rifle at a group of suspected drug smugglers who were throwing rocks at him and fellow agents in Brownsville.

Border Patrol spokeswoman Rosalinda Huey says that around 7 p.m. Monday the agent encountered a group carrying bundles of marijuana near the B & M International Bridge.

When the agent confronted them, they ran toward Mexico and began throwing rocks at the agents.

One agent fired his rifle, but it was unknown if a suspect was wounded. The agents weren't injured.

Huey says agents recovered 13 pounds of marijuana.

She was unsure whether the suspects were across the border in Mexico when the agent fired. She says the incident remains under investigation.
