A Harlingen man is behind bars after he allegedly ambushed a man during a botched robbery in the drive-thru lane of a popular taquería.

Harlingen police arrested 27-year-old Franklin Edgardo Ortiz on an aggravated robbery charge on Monday evening.

Investigators told Action 4 News that it all started in the drive-thru lane of the Taquería El Zarape off West Tyler Avenue around 6:15 p.m. Monday.

Ortiz was allegedly wearing a black ski mask and a white, hooded sweatshirt when he tried to rob a drive-thru customer.

Police said Ortiz hit the drive-thru customer with his gun when the customer refused to hand over any cash.

Ortiz fled on foot but officers found him as the passenger of a car driven by a woman just a few blocks away off South K and Filmore Streets.

The drive-thru customer had some cuts to his face but refused medical treatment.

Ortiz appeared before a Harlingen municipal judge on Tuesday morning where he was issued a $250,000 dollars in bond.
