The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating two separate fatal vehicle accidents that happened Saturday.

A DPS spokesperson said a man is dead after a two car collision at about 7 a.m., near Moorefiled Road, just south of Mile 5 Road near Mission.

The victim was driving a white Mitsubishi Galant, passing on the northbound lane and struck a small red truck, head-on, traveling northbound. The male driver of the truck and a female passenger were taken to McAllen Medical Center in stable conditions.

A second fatal accident took place at about 8:15 a.m. near Mercedes, on FM 491, south of Business 83.  The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the victim involved in a fatal crash near Mercedes as 49-year-old Juan Jose Tamayo of Primera.

Two Mercedes teens, a 17 and 14-year-old remain hospitalized in Harlingen in stable conditions.

Authorities said the crash happened at about 8 a.m. Saturday, along FM 491. They said the teens were driving northbound in a Dodge Charger, when the driver lost control and struck Tamayo, as he was driving southbound in a Dodge pick-up.

Authorities said unsafe speed and weather conditions were both factors.
