A Mexican Mafia member has been spared the death penalty following a mixed verdict handed down by a jury in Brownsville.

Jurors in the murder trial for Wilfred Padilla reached a verdict early Wednesday afternoon.

Padilla is accused in the 2003 murder of Harlingen woman JoAnn Chavez.

Jurors acquitted Padilla of capital murder but convicted him on first-degree felony murder and engaging in organized criminal activity charges.

Sentencing is set for Monday.

Prosecutors had been seeking the death penalty against Padilla but that is off the table after jurors acquitted him of capital murder.
