A Florida truck driver is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after state troopers found more than one ton of marijuana inside his 18-wheeler.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers arrested 30-year-old Valdermin Chavez early Tuesday morning.

Investigators told Action 4 News that a state trooper pulled over Chavez’s 18-wheeler for several traffic violations off Expressway 83 near La Joya around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A closer look revealed a false compartment at the front of the trailer filled with 2,500 pounds of marijuana.

Chavez remains in custody at the Hidalgo County Jail under a possession of marijuana charge.

The case remains under investigation.
