A terror plot to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States has a connection to the Reynosa and the Rio Grande Valley.
Authorities said Mexico helped foil a $1.5 million dollar plot to kill the Saudi Arabian ambassador in Washington D.C.
According to reports, Mexico worked closely with the U.S. government in the case being called Operation Red Coalition.
The operation began in may when an Iranian-American from the Corpus Christi area approached a DEA agent informant, seeking the help of a Mexican drug cartel to assassinate the ambassador.
According to reports, meetings for the plot took place just south of the Rio Grande Valley in Reynosa.
Action 4 News spoke to some Valley residents about the terror plot.
Some said they were amazed that a plot of this magnitude took place so close to home.
Other said nothing surprises them about the Mexican drug cartels anymore.
Residents also said they don't believe the disruption of this plot makes the Valley safer. To them, it's confirmation of the reach and power of the Mexican drug cartels.
Valley residents were also concerned that if this were a deal done with actual cartel members, those $1.5 million dollars would have probably been used to fuel the drug war even further.
