A 38-year-old man is behind bars after he tried to cross a car into Mexico with fake license plates.

Brownsville police arrested Gerardo Cordoba-Araiza at the B&M International Bridge on Tuesday evening.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Cordoba-Araiza was headed into Mexico but was stopped for a southbound inspection.

Customs officers discovered that the car had license plates, vehicle registration and an inspection sticker that were all fake.

Investigators said the 38-year-old man had previously been cited for failing to declare vehicles being crossed into Mexico for release.

Customs officer turned Cordoba-Araiza over to Brownsville police who impounded the car and charged him with Class A misdemeanor tampering with a government record.
