Authorities are investigating a gruesome discovery in a northwest Mercedes neighborhood.

The remains were found in a drainage ditch on Patricia and Liberty Streets…

Investigators have been at the location since 7 a.m. Thursday.

Hidalgo County workers found what appeared to be a human skull but no other bones.

Investigators said were clearing out the ditch and turning out dirt so it doesn’t clog the drains.

Workers found the skull during the project and alerted police.

Investigators will remain out there until about nightfall to see if they unearth any other clues.

Area residents told Action 4 News that there was a male who was reported missing from the neighborhood about 5 weeks ago.

But police are not confirming that the skull belongs to the missing person.

They say they need to conduct DNA testing before that is decided.

Action 4 News will post more information as it becomes available.
